Symantec: it’s dangerous to rely on free antivirus – TECH.BLORGE.com: ““If you are only relying on free antivirus to offer you protection in this modern age, you are not getting the protection you need to be able to stay clean and have a reasonable chance of avoiding identity theft,” he said.”

Don’t be fooled by these types of statements. The manufacturers are trying to diminsh the free/open source product market. Why? Because they want to sell you their product.

We find this one particularly funny. We have used just about every anti-virus product that is made. We have found that the free ones (such as ClamWin) have performed as well, often better, than the pay products. We have had terrible experience with Symantec products. They are bloated, using way too much memory and disk space, and have often missed detecting new viruses. On many occasions, we have had to use another product, often a free one, to clean an infection on a computer “protected” by Symantec.
