Great Open Source Software

For both Windows and Linux:

OpenOffice – MS Office replacement. We find that it can easily replace Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Scribus – MS Publisher replacement.
OpenProj – MS Project replacement.
InkScape – A good replacement for Adobe Illustrator or CorelDraw.
ClamWin Antivirus – Very good anti-virus application.
Mozilla Firefox – Internet Explorer replacement.
Filezilla – Nice FTP server and client applications.
Pidgin – A nice, multi-network chat client.

Not really a software package but a good MS Outlook/MS Exchange replacement is Google Apps. It gives you email, shared calendars, contact management, document storage, and Intranet sites. The only things missing is Notes and Tasks. We find that those are the least used functions for most of our users. If you are a business, Google Apps allows you to slim down your server room and free up your IT staff
